You may be wondering what is all of the hype and questions about deep cleansing facials, how do they differ from a surface facial? There are many key differences and a deep cleansing facial is one of the most penetrating, uninvasive procedures for healthy and beautiful, youthful skin. While washing your face is the first and most important step in keeping your skin clear, there is nothing like a professional facial treatment to get beneath the surface.

Cleansers, masks, and even scrubs are great to cleanse, decongest and even maintain a clear complexion. But, don’t ignore that fact that your skin needs a professional deep pore cleansing every four weeks to prevent future breakouts.

These treatments will help kill bacteria beneath the epidermis, where your cleanser can’t reach. This facial is most effective when combined with the diamond peel treatment to remove the dead skin cells that sit on the top layer of your skin and frequently clogg pores. Your next question is, how is the Deep Cleansing Facial different from other facials? If you are passionate about skin care, no doubt you’ve experienced the disappointment from what you expected to be a deep cleansing facial and instead turned out to be everything but. True, facials can have many forms and serve multiple functions. However, most facials available today offer the foofy without the fitness, making no real change of improvement in your skin. Or they are so invasive, that you need some down time to recover. A deep cleansing facial in uninvasive, and incredibly effective to improve, refine, and revitalize your skin.

You may be wondering, how can I maintain glowing skin in between facials? Beauty comes from the inside and out. Skin is a blue print for what’s taking place inside our bodies. Take supplements rich in Omega 3’s, Acidophilus and Vitamin E, which keep skin hydrated, clear and clean the digestive track which has an immediate effect on the skin.

Appointments at Urban Wellbeing can be made on 0207 851 6624 or please email. Senior beauty therapists Amiee Allsop, will be able to answer any questions, including What is a Deep Cleanse Facial? urbanwellbeing.co.uk

The main cause of ingrown hair in both men and women is hair removal through techniques like shaving, tweezing, electrolysis, waxing and cream depilation, which often irritates the hair follicle and results in an inflammation. While men generally encounter razor bumps on their faces, women may have ingrown hair on legs, underarms, bikini area and any other place where they might have carried out hair removal. People with dry skin are at a higher risk of getting ingrown hair. Stiff, curly or coarse hair is also more prone to getting ingrown. Other factors that cause ingrown hair are genetics, build up of dead skin cells that clog pores and hair follicles that are full of oil.

The goal in waxing, (weather it be a back wax or a brazilian wax), is to remove the entire hair from the follicle, but often it breaks either above or below the skin’s surface. So now instead of a new hair forming and growing back having a beveled edge, it’s now blunt.

Tips for prevention:

Exfoliate before and after. LIGHTLY exfoliating with an ayate cloth or other mild exfoliator before ridding hair helps remove dead skin cells allowing a better and an easier wax. LIGHTLY exfoliating a day after the wax and continuing to do so, a couple times a week depending on your skin type will help keep dead skin cells out of the follicle. When the hair does start coming back, this helps it pointing up instead of going back into the skin.

Most ingrown hair treatment products are a kind of acid mixed with a moisturizer. The most common acids used are glycolic and salicylic acids. Glycolic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid otherwise known as fruit acid, is a mild exfoliating acid you will find in a plethora of skin care creams, cleaners, and moisturizer. It is often used to treat men’s beards and women’s bikini lines. It’s all natural, and is quickly becoming the most commonly used acid skin treatment because of its effectiveness. Look for treatments with no less than 10% concentration to ensure the prevention of ingrown hairs. Salicylic acid, similar to the active ingredient in aspirin, is used in a wide range of skin care products and engages the same basic process that glycolic acid does, exfoliating the skin to help clear pores and keep oils from building up in the hair follicles. So long as you are using these two acids to exfoliate your skin and treat ingrown hairs, you should see a noticeable reduction in the number of ingrown hairs you skin produces.

In our experience the best product for severe ingrown hairs – PFB Vanish

Everyone wants that glowing bronzed skin, it makes you appear more healthy and happier. Having operated a tanning salon in central london for the last eight years, we at Urban Wellbeing have seen the constant see-saw in users. Below is some useful information for even the hardcore tanners.

-7% of the UK’s adult population uses a sunbed = over 3 million people
-70% of people want to be tanned
-95% of sunbed users do not exceed the European Standard on maximum number of sessions per annum
-88% of the UK population has skin types that can tan successfully in a controlled environment
-38% of sunbed users do so for a pre-holiday tan.
-83% of sunbed users claim to be quite or very knowledgeable of the possible risks from over-exposure to UV.
(Source: Consumer Research on Sun tanning and Sunbeds, The Sunbed Association, UK, 1997, conducted by Taylor Nelson with a sample base of 6143 adults.)

The main benefit of being tanned is seen as looking and feeling healthier. The main reason for using a sunbed is for a pre-holiday tan. Whilst the sun protection factor from a sunbed tan does not provide total protection, people having a base tan are less likely to over-expose themselves during the initial days of a holiday.

Sunbeds contains fluorescent tubes, which tan the skin by emitting Ultraviolet (UV) Rays, the same type of radiation that is found in natural sunlight. Two types of radiation reach the earth; UVA and UVB rays. About 95% of sunlight is made up of UVA rays, which causes skin ageing, and about 5% is UVB rays, which causes skin to burn. In Britain, there is no regulation of the makeup of UV radiation in sunbeds.

On average, 10 minutes of sunbed use has the same effect on the skin as 10 minutes of Mediterranean summer sun. Sunlight promotes the body’s production of Vitamin D, and can also be good for conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, rickets or jaundice. However, extensive exposure to sun can be dangerous, and tanning is the skin’s way of protecting itself from further UV damage.

For some time now most beauty salons have been offering the somewhat under advertised or under informed service for male waxing, albeit limiting it to just the front torso and back torso, which, what is appearing to be, detrimental to the undiversifying beauty salons. With the slowly increasing number of beauty salons succumbing to the fact that male waxing is a NEED not a ‘beauty treatment’ and the fact there are now a number of highly professional male only waxing salons opening up all over London, it seems like the unrealised potential still being associated with male waxing should now be unjustified and not only become, just another part of a list of male treatments but a highly regarded and practiced treatment that will inevitably prove it has the demand it deserves.

Some of the facts the guys may want to know and make the first wax an easier one:

Unlike shaving and hair removal creams, waxing removes hair by the root. This means it takes longer to grow back (generally 2-4 weeks) and re-growth is noticeably softer and sparser. No itchy stubble, long lasting results and fantastically smooth skin.

For male body waxing the area is cleansed with a pre wax lotion, then warm strip wax is applied with a spatula or a waxing roller on the particular body part in the direction of hair growth, a paper or fabric strip is then firmly pressed over the wax and quickly removed in the opposite direction removing the hair from the follicle. Once all the hair has been removed an ‘after wax’ cooling lotion or gel is then applied to sooth and calm the area.

The procedure differs when it comes to male intimate waxing as the therapist would more likely use non-strip/hot wax instead of strip wax. When this wax is applied to the skin with a spatula, it coats the hair with a thick layer, as the wax cools it becomes firmer contracting around the hair and gripping them tightly, whilst not sticking to the skin. The wax remains on the skin until it becomes opaque in colour-drying to form a slight tacky consistency. It is then pulled off the skin with a fast movement.

Aftercare tips:
-You should avoid excess sweating, i.e. gym, sauna, steam room.
-It is fine to shower/bathe, but have the water cooler than usual.
-Don’t use highly scented lotions and potions on the waxed area.
-No sunbeds (for a couple of days) or fake tan.
-Wear clean underwear after intimate waxing and generally avoid anything that will allow bacteria to enter the open pores.

If you’re serious about maintaining that clean and hairless feeling, it is recommended that you come in every 4 weeks for the first 4 appointments. You may then find that you will be able to leave longer gaps between your appointments.

Here is an interesting and educating article I found on ‘The ever aging face of men’.

20’s- In your early to mid 20’s you’ll have practically maintenance-free years. Your skin still has plenty of elasticity(elastin) which is the protein substance that helps your skin bounce back after stretching.
Your collagen also is very thick and continuously producing. Collagen is the fibrous protein under the skin that keeps the tissue plump. At this age you can most likely get away with late nights of partying and still look somewhat refreshed. I highly advocate ALWAYS wearing sunglasses when your out in daylight to avoid sun damage around the eyes and also to avoid squinting, which also forms the beginning of crows feet.
Many people are not aware how powerful wearing sunglasses outside really is. By reducing the “squint” effect alone, you’ll keep the skin around your eyes smooth and line free. Your best defense against future wrinkles? By avoiding hot spots with plenty sun exposure is your first step. The majority of future sun spots and wrinkles begin before and during this decade, so your best bet is early, continuous protection from the sun using an oil-free sunscreen with an SPF factor of 15 of higher. Broad spectrum sunscreens protect best against UVA/UVB rays and products containing titanium and zinc oxide block both these spectrum’s.
30’s- Your 30’s will spark the beginning of a transitional stage/decade in your life. With that , oil production will drop about 15% at most and your skin will begin to thin at about the same rate. Previous sun damage will start to show by way of crow’s feet and the skin will begin to sag due to collagen degradation. With late night partying you’ll be more likely to bring out worse dark circles, bags under the eyes and facial puffiness that you could have gotten away with in your 20’s.
Best defense? Avoid the sun as much as you can, wear sunscreen always, and wear sunglasses whenever outside. Protect your skin with an oil-free moisterizer and 2-3 times a week, use a mild scrub, such as clinique’s to exfoliate the skin and to keep the dead skin cells off, resulting in faster turnaround of fresher skin cells and better absorption of moisturizers and other skin care products.
I highly advise using a quality product with retin-A , as this is probably the only proven ingredient in skincare to prevent fine lines and wrinkles from forming around the eyes as well as smoothing the skin around the eyes and entire face. It also acts as an exfolliant for fresher skin.Use an eye cream also at night.
Avoid after shaves that contain alcohol as this will just dry out the skin. I would highly recommend increasing water intake at this age also. Believe it or not, water WILL make your skin look much healthier. It will cushion your skin better and allow for more collagen production.
40’s- In your 40’s , crow’s feet will become more evident, causing creases. The expression lines on your forehead and laugh lines become more evident also. Loss of tissue under the eyes may make you look older and cause a “hollow” look. Your facial oil moisture production will also drop another 10% and your collagen will continue to degrade, causing additional wrinkles.
